Fuel System - Fuel Pump Inspection
Gasoline is extremely flammable and explosive under certain conditions. When working on your 1989 Honda FL400R Pilot ATV's fuel system, ensure you're in a well-ventilated area with the engine off. Never smoke or allow flames or sparks near gasoline, and promptly clean up any spills. If the engine needs to be running for any work, ensure proper ventilation, and never run it in an enclosed space to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.
To inspect the fuel pump:
- Disconnect the fuel pump-to-three-way joint tube at the three-way joint.
- Hold a graduated beaker under the tube, ensuring there are no flames or sparks nearby.
- Start the engine and let it idle.
- Allow the fuel to flow into the beaker for 10 seconds, then stop the engine.
Fuel Pump Flow Capacity:
- 50 cc / 10 seconds at idle
If the pump flow capacity is abnormal, check the following components:
- Fuel and vacuum tubes
- Fuel filter
Replace the fuel pump if the fuel and vacuum tubes, as well as the fuel filter, are in good condition.
