Steering Cable Installation

Honda BF200A-BF225A Outboard Steering Cable Installation

Before final placement of the motor on the transom, follow these steps for steering cable installation. Refer to the steering cable manufacturer's manual for cable handling procedures.

Single Outboard:

  1. Remove the cap from the steering/tilt tube.
  2. Apply marine grease to the inner and outer cable ends. Avoid using wheel bearing grease.
  3. Install the steering cable through the steering/tilt tube from the starboard side. If the steering cable enters from the port side, reverse the steering/tilt tube. Refer to the shop manual for procedures.
  4. Hand-tighten the steering cable cap nut at this time.
  5. Tighten the steering cable nut until the steering cable end play is removed.

Torque: 34 - 49 Nm (3.5 - 4.0 kgf.m, 25 - 36 lbfft)

After torquing the steering cable nut, ensure there is no end play between the outer steering cable and steering/tilt tube. For further information, consult the boat manufacturer's operation manual.

Directly after completing the steering link arm and steering cable installation, verify the following:

  • Motor turns the proper direction when the steering wheel is turned right and left. If steering is reversed, correct at the steering box.
  • Motor steering angle is equal when the steering wheel is turned full right and left. If not, make major corrections at the steering box and minor corrections by moving the steering tilt tube laterally. Make steering angles equal as necessary.
  • Ensure the steering cable and/or steering link arm do not come in contact with any part of the boat when the steering wheel is turned full right and left and at all tilt angles. Correct as necessary and recheck.
