Chassis Preparation for 2005 Ski-Doo Snowmobiles
When preparing your 2005 Ski-Doo snowmobile for optimal performance, proper chassis preparation is essential. This involves several key steps and components to ensure stability, safety, and performance on various terrains and racing conditions.
Taller Track Guides Installation
When oval racing with a heavily studded track, it is recommended to install additional taller track guides. These guides help prevent derailing without over-tightening the track. The increased height reduces the load per guide in high side load situations during turns. It is advised to replace all flat cleats on the right side of the track with taller guides to enhance performance.
Track Guide Cleats Replacement
For this replacement, use part number 486 078 200. It is important to install bushings inside the rear torsion springs on rear suspensions and check track guide clearance on top of the rear suspension A.C.M. when installing taller track guides or studs.
Additional Guides for Ice Lemans Racing
For ice lemans type racing, where left and right-hand corners are encountered, extra guides should be installed on the left side of the track to improve stability and control.
Special Tools
Two special tools are available to assist in the removal and addition of guide clips:
- Guide clip remover
- Guide clip crimper
Skis and Runners
Ensure the skis on your Ski-Doo snowmobile are maintained for optimal performance. The slightly convex shape of the skis improves stability at high speeds on straightaways.
Plastic Ski Benefits
The plastic ski on the MX Z X and MX Z models increases flotation and reduces drag, particularly on snowy surfaces. It is recommended for oval and Ice Lemans racing due to its superior performance compared to steel skis.
Ski Maintenance
Regularly check and maintain the shape of the skis. If they have flattened, use a hydraulic press to restore the original shape, especially for oval racers.
Carbide Inserted Ski Runners
For all forms of racing except drag racing and radar runs, carbide inserted ski runners are necessary. The style and amount of carbide used depend on the racing type and track conditions.
Racing Runners for Ice Tracks
Special flat-backed race runners with 60 carbide inserts are essential for ice race tracks. These runners are heat-treated to withstand high side loads without bending.
Limiter Strap and Shocks Adjustment
Adjust the limiter strap to match the ride height of the front and rear of the snowmobile and achieve the desired weight transfer. Punch new holes in rubber limiter straps if needed. Additionally, for vehicles with HPG T/A shocks, adjust the threaded adjusters to reduce spring preload or use shorter springs if less preload is desired.
