Honda Fourtrax Foreman ATV - Charging System Inspection
NOTE: When inspecting the charging system, follow a step-by-step approach according to the troubleshooting guidelines.
Measuring circuits with a large capacity exceeding the tester's limit may damage the tester. Set the tester at the highest capacity range initially, then gradually decrease it.
For small capacity circuits, keep the ignition switch off during testing to prevent blowing the tester fuse.
Regulated Voltage Inspection
If engine operation is necessary for testing, ensure proper ventilation to avoid running it in enclosed spaces.
NOTE: Ensure the battery is in good condition before proceeding with the test.
- Warm up the engine to normal operating temperature.
- Stop the engine and connect the multimeter to the battery.
CAUTION: Confirm positive and negative terminals to prevent shorts. Never disconnect the battery or any cable in the charging system without switching off the ignition.
- Restart the engine.
- With the headlight on Hi beam, measure the voltage of the multimeter when the engine runs at 5,000 rpm.
STANDARD: 14.7-15.5 V at 5,000 rpm
The battery is normal if the specified regulated voltage is displayed on the multimeter.
NOTE: The speed at which the voltage starts to rise cannot be checked as it varies with temperature and generator loads.
A frequently discharged battery may indicate deterioration even if it appears normal in the regulated voltage inspection.
The charging circuit may be abnormal if any of the following symptoms are encountered:
- Voltage does not rise to regulated voltage:
- Open or short circuit in the charging system wire harness or poorly connected connector.
- Open or short of the alternator.
- Faulty regulator/rectifier.
- Regulated voltage is too high:
- Poorly grounded regulator/rectifier.
- Faulty battery.
- Faulty regulator/rectifier.
