Ignition Coil Inspection

Measure the ignition coil resistance.

Measure primary winding resistance
Measure secondary winding resistance

Ignition Coil Winding Resistance

Primary Winding: 1.87 - 2.53 Ohm
Secondary Winding: 10.4 - 15.6 kOhm

If the meter does not read as specified, replace the coil. If the meter reads as specified, the ignition coil windings are probably good. However, if the ignition system still does not perform as it should after all other components have been checked, test replace the coil with one known to be good. Check the spark plug wire for visible damage. If the spark plug wire is damaged, replace the coil.

Ignition Coil Primary Peak Voltage Inspection

NOTE: Be sure the battery is fully charged.

Remove the spark plug cap, but do not remove the spark plug.
Measure the primary peak voltage as follows.
Connect a commercially peak voltage adapter to the hand tester (250 V DC range), and install the needle adapter set on the peak voltage adapter wire.

Insert the needle adapter inside the seal until the needle reaches the terminal in the connector.
Install a new spark plug into the spark plug cap, and ground it to the engine.

WARNING: To avoid extremely high voltage shocks, do not touch the spark plugs or tester connections.
Turn the ignition switch ON, and run the engine 4 - 5 seconds with the transmission in neutral to measure the primary peak voltage.
Repeat the measurements 5 times for one ignition coil.
