Front Brake Disc Cleaning
Proper maintenance of your 2008 Kawasaki Teryx 750 ATV's front brake discs is crucial for ensuring optimal braking performance and rider safety. One common issue that can affect braking effectiveness is the presence of oil or grease on the brake discs. Over time, contaminants like oil can accumulate on the discs, reducing their friction and compromising braking efficiency.
Cleaning Methods and Precautions
When cleaning the front brake discs, it's essential to use the right cleaning agents and techniques. Oil on a disc must be removed with an oilless cleaning fluid such as trichloroethylene or acetone. These cleaning fluids are effective at dissolving oil and grease, but they are also highly flammable and can be harmful if inhaled for prolonged periods. It's crucial to follow safety precautions and heed the warnings provided by the fluid manufacturers.
Front Brake Disc Removal
If you need to remove the front brake discs for cleaning or replacement, follow these steps:
- Refer to the Front Hub Removal procedure in the Wheels/Tires section of your ATV's manual.
- Locate and remove the Brake Disc Mounting Bolts [A] that secure the brake disc in place.
- Gently remove the Brake Disc [B] from the hub assembly.
Front Brake Disc Installation
When reinstalling the front brake discs, ensure proper alignment and torque specifications:
- Install the disc with the marked side [A] facing toward the steering knuckle.
- Apply a non-permanent locking agent to the brake disc mounting bolts.
- Torque the Front Brake Disc Mounting Bolts to 42 Nm (4.3 kgfm, 31 ftlb).
Front Brake Disc Wear Inspection
Regularly inspect the wear of the front brake discs to determine if they need replacement:
- Measure the thickness of each disc at the point [A] where it has worn the most.
- If a disc has worn past the service limit (4.3 mm), it must be replaced to maintain braking performance and safety.
Front Brake Disc Runout Inspection
Check the runout of the front brake discs to ensure they are not warped or uneven:
- Jack up the ATV so that the wheels are off the ground.
- Remove one side of the front wheels and turn the handlebar fully to one side.
- Set up a dial gauge against the disc [A] and measure the disc runout.
- If the runout exceeds the service limit (TIR 0.3 mm), replace the disc to prevent braking issues.
