Armature Plate Servicing for 1985 4 Deluxe Thru 60 Models
Proper maintenance of the armature plate is crucial for the smooth operation of your 1985 Johnson/Evinrude outboard motor. Follow these steps to ensure optimal performance:
Removal of Armature Plate
- Avoid accidental starting of motor. Disconnect the charge coil connector.
- If equipped, remove the manual starter.
- Remove the flywheel. Refer to Removal of Flywheel.
- Remove the armature plate leads from the support clamps.
- Loosen the screws attaching the armature plate to the retainer plate, and lift the armature plate from the powerhead.
- If necessary for servicing, remove the retainer plate and support plate by disconnecting the throttle lever to mt plate link, then removing the screws from the support plate.
Installation of Armature Plate
- If removed for servicing, install the retainer plate on the crankcase. Next, position the support plate over the retainer plate and align the holes between the plate and crankcase. Apply OMC Nut Lock to threads of screws. Install the screws and tighten to torque of 5-7 Nm (48-60 in. lbs.). Reconnect the throttle lever to armature plate link.
- Apply OMC Moly Lube to the crankcase boss (pilot for armature plate).
- Lubricate the armature plate bearing groove with a light coating of Johnson or Evinrude Outboard Lubricant.
- Insert needle-nose pliers into the slots provided and hold the armature plate bearing compressed while guiding the armature plate into position.
- Position the armature plate on the retainer plate and tighten the screws to a torque of 2.8-4.0 Nm (25-35 in. lbs.).
- Secure the armature plate lead in the support clamps so that the lead has sufficient slack at full advance.
- Install the flywheel. Refer to Installation of Flywheel.
- If removed, install the manual starter assembly.
